Born in Memphis the son of a Pullman porter who played trombone, Booker Little pursued additional studies at the Chicago Conservatory after graduating from high school.

He moved on to New York where he began to perform and record with percussionist Max Roach and the multi-instrumental Eric Dolphy.

He would perform extensively with Dolphy, and in June, 1961, they picked up an important gig at the Five Spot which would eventually produce three live albums.

Booker Little, a man who showed such promise in expanding the bebop genre, died from kidney failure on October 5, 1961.
