A meeting between two all-time giants

Tenor-saxophonist Michael Brecker was one of the most powerful jazz improvisers of all time and a major influential force; the same can be said of pianist McCoy Tyner.

Brecker and Tyner only teamed up on a few occasions, most notably for Tyner’s Infinity CD in 1995 which also included bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Aaron Scott.

Here is the same quartet performing a stirring version of John Coltrane’s “Impressions” at a concert on July 12, 1996.

Great as Tyner plays, and as passionate as drummer Scott is during his lengthy improvisation, there is no topping Brecker’s tremendous high-energy solo which is quite passionate and virtuosic.
