Miles Davis on two songs with
the Gil Evans Orchestra

In 1959 for a half-hour television special, Miles Davis was featured in two settings: with his quintet on “So What” and on three numbers with the Gil Evans Orchestra.

This clip features most the second half of the program, with Davis is top form performing Dave Brubeck’s “The Duke” and the slow and dramatic “Blues For Pablo.”

With Gil Evans conducting the 19-piece orchestra (which includes bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb, Billy Barber’s prominent tuba, and two French horns), Miles Davis’ melancholy and expressive flugelhorn is featured throughout.
