Cornetist Adderley and Joe Zawinul

Cornetist Nat Adderley (1931-2000) spent much of his career in the shadow of his brother altoist Cannonball Adderley with whom he played for 20 years.

However Nat was a very good soloist himself and a skilled composer who wrote “Work Song,” “The Old Country” and other memorable songs.

On the show Dial M for Music in 1968, Nat Adderley leads a quartet comprised of the rhythm section of his brother’s quintet that consist of pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Victor Gaskin, and drummer Roy McCurdy.

Together they play Nat’s “The Electric Seal,” an upbeat and funky number that not only has a fine cornet solo but one of Zawinul’s last appearances on acoustic piano before he permanently switched to electric keyboards.
