The British saxophonist plays Charlie Parker’s alto shortly
before it was auctioned in 1994

At a most unusual auction in Sept. 1994 in London, Peter King had the opportunity to perform on Charlie Parker’s horn, the same alto that Bird had played at the famous Massey Hall concert in 1953.

Long a brilliant altoist himself whose boppish style was strongly influenced by Charlie Parker, King plays an unaccompanied “Parker’s Mood” and then performs “Confirmation,” “Lover Man” and “Wee” with a trio.

This clip just has King’s solos but they are wonderful to see and hear for he captures the essence of Parker’s style and swings hard.

Happily, Charlie Parker’s horn was won by the Kansas City Jazz Museum and can be viewed in Kansas City today.
