A performance in the Jazz Messengers tradition

The Jazz Messengers during 1955-90 featured a long list of up-and-coming jazz musicians who would become important soloists and bandleaders after they graduated from drummer Art Blakey’s swinging institution.

On Oct. 15, 2014, five top alumni from the Messengers came together with drummer Ralph Peterson to create exciting music.

On a medium-tempo piece, altoist Craig Handy, tenor-saxophonist Billy Pierce, trumpeter Lynch and pianist Donald Brown take fine solos with bassist Charles Fambrough and Peterson swinging in support of the lead voices.

Personnel:

Ralph Peterson, drums
Brian Lynch, trumpet
Craig Handy, alto
Billy Pierce, tenor
Donald Brown, piano
Essiet Essiet, bass

- Scott Yanow
