An explosive version of
Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite"
Altoist Richie Cole, a master of bebop, has led many excellent groups since the 1970s.
The band that he led in 1981, which featured pianist Bobby Enriquez, guitarist Bruce Forman, bassist Marshall Hawkins and drummer Scott Morris, was one of his most exciting.
This version of “Yardbird Suite,” performed live at the Village Vanguard, is taken quite up-tempo and is filled with highlights.
Bobby Enriquez leads off with a hyper solo that, while being boppish, finds him making music out of slides between notes, often hitting the piano with his fists and never letting up.
Bruce Forman, who looks on with amusement and wonder during the piano solo, provides some fireworks of his own before Richie Cole takes a solo filled with furious double-time runs and his own strong musical personality.
With drummer Scott Morris driving the band, the music is quite stirring.
