Haynes takes an outstanding drum solo while with Stan Getz

Roy Haynes, who was born in 1925 and is still active at the age of 94, used to be one of the most underrated drummers, overshadowed by such greats as Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams, not to mention Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson.
It took some time but Haynes is finally recognized as being on the same level as those other drummers; after all, who else played regularly with Luis Russell, Charlie Parker (as a member of his 1949 quintet), Lester Young, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, John Coltrane and Chick Corea?
From a London concert in 1966 with the Stan Getz Quartet (which also includes Getz on tenor, vibraphonist Gary Burton and bassist Steve Swallow), Haynes performs “Jive Hoot.”
Getz takes a hard-driving solo but this performance is primarily a feature for Haynes who displays both his impressive technique and imagination during a powerful five-minute drum improvisation.
