Bechet’s 1941 recording of "Egyptian Fantasy"

Sidney Bechet (1897-1959) was one of the first great jazz soloists, making many classic recordings during 1923-58.

A masterful clarinetist who eventually made soprano-sax his main instrument, Bechet was a passionate and forceful New Orleans player equally skilled as a soloist and in ensembles.

"Egyptian Fantasy," recorded on Jan. 8, 1941, was one of Bechet’s most memorable originals, a performance that features the composer throughout on his distinctive clarinet.

Personnel:

Sidney Bechet, clarinet
Henry "Red" Allen, trumpet
J.C. Higginbotham, trombone
James Tolliver, piano
Wellman Braud, bass
J.C. Heard, drums

- Scott Yanow
