Keyboardist-bandleader-visionary Sun Ra was always in his own musical category.

His 1989 appearance on David Sanborn’s Night Music has Ra chatting a bit with Sanborn (fascinating in itself) before his Arkestra launches into the six-note (three up, three down) pattern of "Retrospekt."

Ra creates some outer space sounds on his synth and there are colorful solos from altoist Marshall Allen (mostly in the stratosphere) and tenor-saxophonist John Gilmore.

This piece is intriguing to watch, and makes one happy that in 1989 Sun Ra's adventurous music was aired on national television.
