George Adams performs a truly beautiful version of the standard
Tenor-saxophonist George Adams (1940-92) and pianist Don Pullen (1941-95) were both members of Charles Mingus’ band for a few years in the 1970s before co-leading their own quartet during 1979-92.
While Adams and Pullen were involved in avant-garde projects during parts of their careers, they could also dig deep into a melody and bring out its beauty.
George Adams is featured in 1987 on a classic version of “What A Wonderful World” performed at the Blue Note in Tokyo while accompanied by Pullen.
Adams plays the melody with a great deal of feeling, surprising and delighting the pianist by verbally singing “I love you” during the first chorus.
The great tenor is more explorative during the second chorus but keeps the melody close by and climaxes the memorable performance with a long low note.
Personnel:
George Adams, tenor
Don Pullen, piano
- Scott Yanow
