Cliff Jordan grew up in Chicago where he became a formidable tenor saxophonist performing in R&B groups in addition to Max Roach and Sonny Stitt before relocating to New York in 1957.

He made his recording debut that year, releasing three albums on the Blue Note label and performed with with Horace Silver and J.J. Johnson among others.

He was a member of the "Max Roach Quartet" form 1962 to 1964 and toured Europe with Charles Mingus' Sextet featuring Eric Dolphy in 1964.

From the mid-'60s on Jordan worked predominately as a leader visiting Europe on several more occasions.

He appeared briefly in a quartet headed by Cedar Walton in 1974 and 1975 and before going on to lead a big band during his final years.
