Barry Altschul's background in traditional jazz helped strengthen the free playing style for which he is known. His drumming has been described as strong and consistent but subtle and not overbearing.
Born on January 6, 1943, Barry Altschul got his start playing with Paul Bley in the 60s.
In 1969, he hooked up with Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Anthony Braxton to form the group Circle.
In the 70s, he worked extensively with Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, and George Lewis at part of the Anthony Braxton Quartet.
Other musicians he's worked with over the years include: Lee Konitz, Art Pepper, Billy Bang, Joe Fonda, Roswell Rudd, Dave Liebman, Barre Phillips, Denis Levaillant, Andrew Hill, Sonny Criss, Hampton Hawes, and Lee Konitz.
