Benny Golson was born in Philadelphia, PA where he played with other up and coming musicians, including Red Garland, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy & Percy Heath, and John Coltrane.

Golson was co-leader of the "Jazztet" with Art Farmer from 1959 to 1962.

For a twelve year period left jazz to concentrate on studio and orchestral composing scores for numerous TV shows most prominently M*A*S*H, Mannix, Mission Impossible, Ironside, and Mod Squad.

Benny Golson returned to playing jazz in the mid-1970s and in 1982 reassembled his "Jazztet"
