Written by Strayhorn, “Take the 'A' Train” is a jazz standard that became incredibly associated with Duke Ellington and his orchestra. The Duke would make it the orchestra's signature tune and often use it to open concerts. It would be just one of many pieces that he would write for Ellington – particularly during a composer's strike that left Ellington temporarily sitting on the composer sidelines.

It was then that song would replace “Sepia Panorama” as the Ellington orchestra's signature melody.
