Lester and Ella in 1950

A great occasion is jazz film history...

Photographer Gjon Mili from Life Magazine hooked up in 1944 with Norman Granz to produce a short film called "Jammin' the Blues. " It was so good it was nominated for Best Short Subject at the 1945 Academy Awards,

Players included Lester Young, Red Callendar, Harry Edison, "Big" Sid Catlett, Illinois Jacquet, Barney Kessel, Jo Jones and Marie Bryant.

In 1950, the two took another shot at it using musicians from Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic tour.

Sadly, the funding dried up and the project was never completed. This footage sat for 50 years in storage unwatched.

I wonder what else is out there?

The players:

Harry 'Sweets' Edison: trumpet
Lester Young: Tenor Sax
Flip Phillips: Tenor Sax
Bill Harris: Trombone
Hank Jones: Piano
Ray Brown: Bass
Buddy Rich: Drums
Ella Fitzgerald: Vocals
