Chucho Valdés was born October 9, 1941 in Quivicán, Cuba. His father the legendary Bebo Valdés was also a pianist and the music director of the Tropicana's in house band, one of the most important venues for Cuban music.

Chucho has won four Grammy Awards.

Keeping up the tradition, Chucho's son, Chuchito, is also a jazz pianist.
