Best known among jazz fans for his work with Charles Mingus, native New Yorker Dannie Richmond started on the tenor saxophone in his early teens.

In 1955 after plying sax as a member of the "Paul Williams Band" gave up on the instrument in favor of drums. Six months later he joined Charles Mingus who was impressed by his ability to play at very fast tempos flawlessly.

During his twenty-one year's with Charles Mingus the two inspired musicians would establish a close rhythmic pairing previously unprecedented in jazz.

Following Mingus' death Dannie Richmond paid tribute to his memory by becoming the first musical director of the group "Mingus Dynasty" in 1980.
