A joyful performance from 1980 with the Oscar Peterson Trio

Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson sang and played the blues in many different settings through the years, from the Cootie Williams Orchestra and his own big band to freewheeling r&b combos and jazz groups that straddled the boundaries between swing and bop.

In 1980, Cleanhead was the guest during an episode of Oscar Peterson and Friends, a half-hour television series that broadcast from Canada.

One of the songs that he performed was the medium-tempo blues “Kidney Stew” which gave him a chance not just to sing but play a bit of his alto sax.

Personnel:

Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, vocals, alto
Oscar Peterson, piano
Ray Brown, bass
Bobby Durham, drums

- Scott Yanow
