Among the most popular saxophonists of his generation Grover Washington Jr. grew up in a musical household in Buffalo, New York. His mother was leader of led the church choir and his father a saxophonist and collector of 78rpm Jazz records. Such early exposure aided Grover's musical development. He received a saxophone as a gift from his father when he was eight and as the years passed blossomed into a prominent songwriter and talented instrumentalist. Considered a founding father of smooth jazz his memorable hits include "Mister Magic", and "Black Frost".
