After a two-year Army stint, in 1954 Hampton Hawes would return from Japan to form his trio. In a couple of years, Down Beat magazine would praise his arrival on the jazz scene – particularly as a cutting-edge West Coaster. By 1957 he had released an album with jazz bass legend Charles Mingus.
