Woody Shaw was a North Carolina native blessed with perfect pitch and a photographic memory, considered one of the most innovative trumpet players and jazz band leaders of his generation.
In his teenage years Shaw played night clubs, weddings and social events sitting in with many musicians including Lou Donaldson, Hank Mobley and Kenny Dorham.
His record debut was on Eric Dolphy's "Iron Man" in 1963, after which at 19 he relocated to Paris to work with the band. Following Dolphy's passing in 1964, Woody remained almost two years playing with many other's including Johnny Griffin and Dexter Gordon.
