An all-star bop performance

This is a fascinating excerpt of a jam session on a cooking blues.

Pianist Joe Zawinul stretches out on a boppish solo, showing his roots in straight ahead jazz just a short time before he permanently switched to electric keyboards.

Flugelhornist Art Farmer, trombonist J.J. Johnson and altoist Cannonball Adderley trade heated phrases with drummer Mel Lewis.

Ron Carter closes the performance with a virtuosic bass solo before the film fades out.

Due to Farmer’s quote of Jimmy Heath’s “Gingerbread Boy” (composed in 1964) which Miles Davis recorded in 1966 as did Farmer for an unissued album, my guess is that this jam session took place that year.
