In 1970 Joe became an original member of joined Max Roach's percussion ensemble, "M'Boom."

He went on to perform with jazz elders Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, and Art Farmer and formed the "Super Jazz Trio" with Flanagan and bassist Reggie Workman.
