Sanremo Jazz FestivalItaly, 1964
Puerto Rican composer Juan Tizol wrote “Caravan” in 1936, which Duke Ellington would first perform himself that year. And Tizol appeared on the first recording, playing trombone.
Ellington's own influential “I Got it Bad,” from 1941, would later be recorded by a plethora of artists – many of whom had nebulous links to Jazz – such as Carly Simon, Donna Summer and Cher.
Joining Ellington is Johnny Hodges on alto sax, and Paul Gonsalves on tenor.
That's how we grow.
