Kenny Drew Jr. was born in New York on June 14, 1958 and studied classical piano in his youth under the tutelage of his grandmother.

In spite of being the son of renowned jazz pianist Kenny Drew Sr., he did not devolve an interest in the genre until later initially playing in funk bands.

While attending Iona College during the late 1970s he was the pianist for the "Iona College Singers", an entertainment troop that traveled to promoted the school's name.

Making a transition to jazz piano Kenny Jr. chose his own path emerging with a style and approach influenced by Thelonious Monk that differed a great deal from that of his father.

He went on to win the 1990 Great American Jazz Piano competition in Jacksonville, Florida.

Kenny Drew Jr. preferred to perform mainly as a soloist or in a trio setting backed by bass and drums and released twenty albums between 1987 and 2012.
