Jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer Kenny Wheeler passed away in London at the age of 84. Born in Toronto, Canada, Mr. Wheeler, recognized as “ingenious” and “quietly influential” by critics, spent his early years as a session musician in his adopted home of London, England. He became known for his free improvisation skills, and his challenging arrangements.
Mr. Wheeler became internationally famous in the mid-1970s with the release of his composition “Gnu High”. Despite being hailed for the “understated grace” of his playing and “melodic”, “unexpected” compositions, he was humble about his accomplishments. His last recording, “Six for Six,” was released in 2013.
Thank you, Kenny, for the beautiful music.
