Newport, 1988

Herbie Hancock performs the standard "Oleo" at the 1988 Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island.

By the 1980s, Hancock had broken into the emerging world of electronic and hip-hop music. In 1983, he released the landmark single "Rockit," an infectious single from his album Future Shock that fused jazz, funk, hip hop, and electronic music.

Despite his innovations in genres outside of jazz, Hancock still performed mainly as a jazz artist.

"Oleo" was written by saxophonist Sonny Rollins in 1954.

Personnel:

Herbie Hancock - piano
Buster Williams - bass
Al Foster - drums
