After making a name for himself in Chicago playing and recording with Joe King Oliver's "Creole Jazz Band" during the early 1920s, New Orleans trumpeter Louis Armstrong took the jazz world by storm as a member of the "Fletcher Henderson Orchestra."
Following his brief stay in New York with the Henderson band he returned to Chicago and became the leader of his own "Hot Five" group with whom he would build an impeccable reputation as one of the greatest jazz artists of all time.
Although Armstrong often stated that he was born on the fourth of July 1900 it was later discovered through the examination of baptismal records that the true date of his birth was August 4th 1901.
