The influential trio performs some avant-funk

One of the most significant groups of the past quarter-century, Medeski, Martin and Wood perform funky jazz their own way.

“Big Time,” which was originally recorded in 2000 for their The Dropper album, was revived and stretched out during this performance from the Umbria Jazz Festival

The piece begins with a rhythmic riff from the keyboard that along the way is taken up individually on the drums and later the bass.

Medeski has an opportunity to wail on the organ, there are short spots for Martin and Wood along with a brief bit of group improvising, and the tight trio shows that they can make the most out of the least with exciting results.

Personnel:

John Medeski, keyboards
Chris Wood, bass
Billy Martin, drums

- Scott Yanow
