He was born November 11, 1927 in the Mississippi Delta, Tippo Mississippi to be exact.

In 1956 he moved to the Big Apple and was soon performing with the likes of Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, and Phil Woods.

In 1957. his first album, Back Country Suite, was released the the Prestige label. He formed his own trio in 1958.

This year Allison was designated a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.
