Philip Wells Woods was born November 2, 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
His musical education included Lennie Tristano, the Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard.
Like Sonny Stitt and Cannonball Adderley, he was pegged with the "Little Bird" nickname though he's clearly not a Parker copyist.
A documentary has been made about his life: Phil Woods A Life in E Flat-Portrait of a Jazz Legend.
It was released in 2005. Directed by Rich Lerner and produced by Graham Carter, the film documents one of his recording sessions.
Woods 20 years later in France, on a musical exploration. You might want to go along too...
That's how we grow.
