Performance recorded in 1989

Swallow was born October 4, 1940, in Fair Lawn, New Jersey

He started with trumpet and piano as a child, but at 14 picked up the double bass and started playing jazz.

In 1960 he left Yale University, where he had been studying composition, and moved to New York City.

His first break was with Jimmy Giuffre's trio, which included Paul Bley on piano. In 1964 he joined Art Farmer's quartet and later began his long association with Gary Burton.

He picked up the electric bass in the early 1970s.

In 1978 Swallow joined Carla Bley's band and in the early 1980's he played and toured with John Scofield. He still plays with both these artists.
