Have you ever been to the Montreal Jazz Festival?
If you live in the Northeast and you're a jazz fan, you can drive to it - and some year you should.
I have to admit that I haven't been to many jazz festivals, just New Orleans, Montreal, and the incomparable New York Jazz Festival that went Kool and then JVC and then into sad oblivion.
I'm NOT a big fan of the New Orleans Festival though I'm a massive fan of the city. In fact, my advice is avoid the Fairgrounds and just hit the clubs. You can see many giants sitting in versus seeing them on a stage from 500 feet away.
Quint Davis and the shady group that runs the thing and has a stranglehold on the local music scene are morphing Jazz Fest into a Pop Rock Festival with a little jazz on the side. If you must, drop in for one day and you'll see what I'm talking about. Unless you're a diehard "festival person" (and you might well be - enjoy), this is simply not a good venue for music.
In contrast, Montreal does a beautiful job with its festival, or at least it used to. I haven't been able to go go seven years now.
Incredible small concert hall shows like Pat Metheny re-united with Gary Burton and a truly amazing tour de force from Dewey Redman shortly before his passing (did someone film it. I hope so!)
In addition to the paid shows, there are lots of excellent free outdoor shows. That's how you do a festival. Viva Montreal!
