Berlin Jazzfest, 1991

The "Art Ensemble of Chicago" perform at Berlin Jazzfest on October 31, 1991.

Lester Bowie, trumpet
Joseph Jarman, reeds
Roscoe Mitchell, reeds
Malachi Favors Maghostut, bass
Famoudou Don Moye, drums

One of the great groups of the avant-garde era and I think arguably one of the greatest jazz groups ever.

I realize a lot of Jazz on the Tube listeners are more familiar with the hard bop era and before, but groups like the Art Ensemble of Chicago are the logical extension of the innovations set in motion by Charlie Parker. I selected this piece so you can see their musicianship. There's a lot here and a lot worth getting to know. -Lester Perkins
