The NBA did it right.

They didn’t just come to New Orleans to play a game, they rolled up their sleeves and helped out in various ways.

One thing they did was put some of the city’s music all-stars in the spotlight: the Rebirth Brass Band, Harry Connick Jr., Kermit Ruffins, Jonathan Batiste, Branford Marsalis…which helps not only the city, but also advances the cause of culture, not to mention spirit, in America.

Larry Blumenfeld interviewed one of the legends of the game, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, about the historical and spiritual connections between jazz and basketball and Kareem had some deep things to say about New Orleans. Well worth reading.
