Percussionist Annette Aguilar, who was born in San Francisco, began playing the drums in sixth grade.

She spent time playing Latin rock as a teenager and performed with Cal Tjader and Sheila E. early on.

After earning music degrees, she played reggae, touring Europe with Casselberry-DuPreé, and in 1992 formed her own Latin jazz band Annette A. Aguilar & Stringbeans, an ensemble that utilizes violin and harp.

The group has recorded three albums and toured extensively overseas; Aguilar has also played with Tito Puente, Stevie Wonder and the Grateful Dead, and is a teacher in New York.

During this informative percussion discussion , a LiveStream from July 8, 2020 that is presented by the Bronx Music Heritage Center, Annette Aguilar talks about and demonstrates many types of rhythms, concluding with a solo.
