Review:

This is the sixty third in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

A virtuoso bassist who is always creative, Avishai Cohen was born in Israel, started on the piano at nine, and switched to bass at 14.

Cohen gained his initial fame in the jazz world during a stint with Chick Corea; he has also played with Claudia Acuna, Danilo Perez, Kurt Rosenwinkel , Seamus Blake and Amos Hofman, but most often has been heading his own groups, leading at least 17 albums since1998.

For this LiveStream from June 21, 2020, Cohen performs in his home studio in Israel with pianist Omri Mor and drummer Noam David.

The music, all originals other than Oscar Pettiford’s Tricotism,” features close interplay between the musicians who play in a musical democracy with Cohen the first among equals.

Their quick reactions to each other make their post bop explorations enjoyable to watch.
