Bria Skonberg, who is from British Columbia, made her initial reputation as a hot jazz trumpeter, appearing at many jazz festivals and leading the Mighty Aphrodite Jazz Band.
She led several other groups (including Bria’s Hot Five and the Big Bang Jazz Band), moved to New York in 2010, and developed her skills as a singer, entertainer and bandleader while also co-founding the New York Hot Jazz Festival.
On her LiveStream from Sept. 20, 2020, Bria Skonberg begins in spectacular fashion by playing unaccompanied trumpet on a four-minute version of “That’s A Plenty,” going through all of the themes and playing all of the parts (including a drum break).
Among the other highlights are seeing her sing and play a keyboard on “Sway,” vocalizing and whistling while backing herself on guitar during “I Wish You Love,” utilizing a plunger mute during her trumpet solo on “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You,” and performing such numbers as “Love Me Or Leave Me” (while playing piano), “L-O-V-E,” “Brazil,” Pete Seeger’s “Where Have All The Flowers Gone,” a Hoagy Carmichael medley (“Stardust,” “Riverboat Shuffle,” a very brief “Georgia On My Mind” and “Jubilee”), and “Que Sera Sera,” clearly having a great time throughout.
