Review:

This is the seventy eighth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

The youngest of the four musical Marsalis Brothers, Jason Marsalis originally gained fame as a drummer but in recent years has been doubling as a creative vibraphonist.

On this LiveStream from June 4, 2020, Marsalis plays unaccompanied vibes on Sonny Rollins’ “East Broadway Run Down” (an adventurous and atmospheric work), Billy Strayhorn’s famous ballad “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing,” and Milt Jackson’s medium-tempo blues “A Groove For Bags.”

He switches to drums, plays two melodic and well-constructed solos, and then whistles while playing drums on “I’m An Old Cowhand.”
