A brilliant jazz pianist who can be a real powerhouse on uptempo tunes, Otmaro Ruiz was born and raised in Venezuela.

While being trained to become a biologist, in 1983 he chose music, becoming a busy studio musician in Venezuela.

Ruiz moved to Los Angeles in 1989, playing with Alex Acuna and gaining attention for his work with Arturo Sandoval; he has since led his own groups, performed with many greats from various genres (including Tito Puente, Herb Alpert, John McLaughlin, Dianne Reeves, Lee Ritenour, Hubert Laws and Brian Bromberg) and led at least seven CDs of his own.

On his LiveStream from July 23, 2020, Otmaro Ruiz plays an exploration of “What Is This Thing Called Love” and performs his colorful originals (some of which have romantic melodies) which display both his impressive technique and his vivid imagination.
