Review:

This is the one hundred and eighty ninth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Pianist Paul Cornish was born and raised in Houston, studying classical piano from the age of five.

He moved to Los Angeles to study at USC and is a graduate student at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA

On his LiveStream from Aug. 6, 2020, Paul Cornish displays impressive technique, a bright and swinging style, and his own voice on the piano.

He performs Benny Golson’s “Along Came Betty,” and Dave Brubeck’s “Strange Meadowlark,” improvises over a repeated fragment of Billie Holiday’s “I’ll Be Seeing You” (definitely an acquired taste), engages in an exploration of “Blowing In The Wind,” performs wo songs in which he interacts with a spoken word tape, and plays some originals; Paul Cornish is certainly an up-and-coming talent.
