Review:

This is the twenty fourth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

While the recorder is often thought of as a kid’s toy or, in some cases, as a device to play classical or folk melodies, Tali Rubinstein has shown that her instrument has a great deal of potential.

She studied classical music, competed at competitions, and was the first recorder player to ever study at Berklee.

She has since made several recordings, performed internationally, and appeared at quite a few major festivals.

On this solo performance from April 14, 2020, Tali Robinson plays a variety of originals (sometimes humming through her recorder to get a droning effect) and is joined by a percussionist for the second half.

Throughout the show, Tali Robinson displays impressive technique on her recorder with the fluency of a flutist or piccolo player.
