Review:

This is the one hundred ninetieth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Bobby Carcassés was born in Jamaica and grew up in Cuba.

A multi-instrumentalist and singer, Carcassés worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Airto Moreira and Ronnie Scott among others, founded the Havana Jazz Festival in 1980, and is the father of pianist Roberto Carcassés.

On his spirited and fast-moving LiveStream from Jan. 21, 2021, Carcassés begins by taking a solo on congas, plays piano and sings with a rhythm section, and then takes his place as the lead singer with a salsa/Latin jazz band that includes three horns.

Among the numbers that are performed are “La Noche,” “Hot House” (which Carcassés scats and gives the band a chance to stretch out), and “Blues Guaquanco.”
